Bundle Deal: Fail-Safe 0.5 W Long Range FM Transmitter + 1/4 Wave GP Antenna Kit ($200 Value) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I acquired this system in order to extend a saddle club's Public Address system over a two acre arena complex that cannot be fully served by speakers. The performance is exceptional and the hardware is very good quality.
It is a very compact and easy to use transmitter with impressive stereo fidelity. The package includes a 'rubber-ducky' antenna, a 1/4-wave tunable antenna, about 30-ft. of RG-58 transmission line coax and a stereo audio cable with 3.5-mm plugs to attach an audio source. The signal carried 1/2-mile noise free with an initial and very sloppy test setup using only the rubber-ducky antenna extended on the supplied coax. An audio device used next to either antenna may not work due to FM interference. This is not a hardware fault and is fixed with antenna extension.
The 1/4-wave antenna is an interesting piece comprised of five telescoping antenna sections connected to a BNC Fem-Fem 'barrel' adapter. It's tempting, but the only justification to use this antenna is in a limited special circumstance in a highly rural area where it cannot create interference. In any event, it is not legal to use with this transmitter, but it is worth acquiring for usable accessories.
The rubber-ducky antenna is more practical. It CAN and should be extended. For outdoors, assemble it into 1-in. PVC pipe pieces that create a weather sealed unit with the antenna and coax joined by the BNC connector included with the 1/4-wave antenna. A 'down' pipe provides for a mount to a non-metallic surface. Use a 18-24 in. horizontal pipe piece to extend the antenna away from the mounting surface. It's cheap and easy and it may not be necessary to glue the pipe if the mount area is not exposed to rain. Photos are posted to show the ease of assembly.
BE RESPONSIBLE WITH THIS TRANSMITTER. It is a relative flamethrower when installed as supplied that fails to comply with the limits under 47 CFR Part 15 for unlicensed transmitters. This reg specifies a signal limit at a fixed distance which this package greatly exceeds. The practical fix is to use the rubber-ducky at GROUND LEVEL as described with as much RG-58 coax as you can supply. The coverage may yet not comply to the letter, but along with a careful frequency choice it should not draw the attention of someone with an FCC badge who does NOT need a search warrant to take your stuff and issue a huge fine. If you run it to the max with an elevated antenna on an interfering frequency I want to be there when the Feds show up. As a broadcast engineer, I've seen it happen and it's always entertaining. Comply with the spirit of Part 15 and all is well.
