(More customer reviews)I just got this unit installed today in my 2004 Scion xB so I am not reviewing the long term functionality of the unit although so far it seems to meet expectations. I did have some issues that were resolved with installation. First, the unit has a DIP switch that needs to be set before installation, you have to visit their website to get the code for your car. The instruction manual is very generic, and contains no vehicle specific information.
When I removed my radio from the dash I was confused, as the "vehicle specific" cable supplied has 3 connectors on it but there was only one open connection on the radio. I looked around trying to figure out if the others went to something else but couldn't find anything. Then when I powered everything back up I found the unit was not functioning: the ipod was not charging and would not play back over the stereo.
I used the contact form on their website and explained my problem, thinking I would never hear from them. To my surprise I received an email back minutes later explaining the extra connectors (not used) and the tech asked me to cycle the position of the DIP switches and try again, which fixed my problem and now my ipod is charging and plays through the stereo.
I'm using this with my Touch and so far have verified that track change stereo controls change the song playing and that the player pauses when the car is turned off and resumes when turned on which is what I really wanted.
If you are new to installation you might want to ask a pro for help with this installation or find internet help beforehand to ensure you can get access to the back of the radio and get the cable routed.
For my installation once the issues were figured out only took about 20 minutes and only required a screwdriver.

(More customer reviews)When I first hooked this up to my iPod, it worked as expected...the first time. I used it for about 20 minutes. The second time, about 10 minutes into using it the FM transmitter seemed to stop transmitting. I made sure it was completely in the 12V outlet and all the connections were secure, and it was on the right FM frequency. Even without the iPod attached, there should be silence on the frequency on which it's transmitting, but it was just static. The charging part of it still works fine. The FM transmitter works off and on for apparently no reason. Even when it is transmitting, the cord that goes to the headphone jack is very spotty - you have to turn it around in the jack just right or you only get sound to one side of the car or there's a lot of static. My headphones work just fine, so it's not the jack on the iPod. When it's actually transmitting and everything is adjusted just right, it sounds great. I'd return it, but for $9 it's not even worth paying the return shipping. So, if you're looking for a charger, it works fine. If you're looking for an FM transmitter, I'd look elsewhere.

You've got this adjustable, padded iPod holder, shiny blue light-up display, and super sweet remote. It seems really hi-tech and useful. Then you plug in your iPod and try actually listening to your music. Big mistake.
This product's novelty will wear off really fast when you start listening to your music and realize the quality is borderline unbearable. I highly, highly recommend against purchasing this product. If you want clear, quality reception when listening to your iPod, buy the Monster iCarPlay. It's cheaper in price, and the quality is much better. Sure, it won't hold your iPhone or give you a fancy remote to show off to your friends, but the quality difference is distinct and important. The 8-in-1 sounds worse than a bad radio station, no matter what station you put it on. The iCarPlay had multiple stations that sounded crystal clear- stations that when chosen on the 8-in-1 sounded like complete garbage.
I wasted $50 on this product, and was so convinced by its shiny, sleek looks that it was a quality item, I chucked the packaging and can't return it now. Don't make my mistake.

When you have a 1GB or 2GB drive with hundreds of songs loaded, you may not want to hear them IN-THE-EXACT-SAME-ORDER-OVER-AND-OVER-AND-OVER again... You have to use the remote or try not to hit a guardrail while you struggle to depress the little button on the unit... and usually hit the frequency changer instead, making your same-ole music screechy with radio static. Now you know why I'm in an obvious panic when you pass me on the road! And these are not in track name order, they're in the order in which you ADDED THEM TO YOUR CARD OR USB DRIVE! Ouch! It's nice that they made the buttons larger for us drivers (too bad car and mini-van manufacturers didn't anticipate us dinking with the lighter socket WHILE driving so they're not always convenient...), but they also made them dual-function. For example, holding the change frequency buttons for more than one second and the volume will change. Nice otherwise, plenty of frequencies (analog), limited remote. Too bad we can't enter in a song number and it plays from there... the remote simply duplicates the onboard buttons. No power pack to remember or charge or manage, use your SD cards or USB flash drives with ease... The display shows the song titles and info (please pull over first!). If you're looking for THE solution to auto MP3, this is only it if you like ORDER. If you want to mix it up a little, keep on looking!

(More customer reviews)Everything about this product works great except for one important item. First the good things:
1. The transmitter is strong and crisp
2. Works with the iPhone 3g
3. The arm is great - moves around to wherever you wish. Very sturdy.
4. You only need to insert the jack for hands free calling (only need the charger to listen to music).
Overall & originally, I was overjoyed at how well this product worked.
Now, the bad:
1. It doesn't swivel so that you can put the iPhone in landscape/coverflow mode... Not a big deal though... But what IS a big deal:
2. The unit actually "beeps" about once a minute. Sometimes you can hear it really well (listening to talk radio), and sometimes not at all (but usually you will hear at least one beep every five minutes or so). I wrote the MediaGate Tech Support, and their reply was:
"The reason for it beeping every 30 seconds or so is in order for the FM transmitter and FM radio to stay active and not in idle mode, it requires the unit to beep. This is a normal feature but unfortunately there is no way of turning this off."
I'm not sure if I am going to return this yet; but I have a feeling it could go one of two ways... Either it drives me insane, or I just start not hearing it like a grandfather clock. I'll try it for another couple days and see how I feel...

(More customer reviews)Despite the great price of this product, I was quite disappointed when it broke within three uses. Two main problems...the iPod doesn't stay docked well and frequently falls out while going down the road. Secondly, the dongle that plugs into the bottom of the iPod came apart to where only the metal was exposed. This was a huge problem in that the small parts cannot be easily reassembled (if at all) and caused the dongle to get jammed into the iPod. Luckily, I was able to remove it and salvage my iPod from any permanent damage. There are two great points to this product, however. One being its clarity. When the proper channel was chosen, the songs came in rather clearly. The second is the remote. The remote worked great and was a nice addition. All in all, I would not recommend this product.

First impression when I got the package - had clearly been a returned product without any instructions, damaged packaging, and areas of writing blacked out with marker. Item clearly works to charge my ipod touch but only has 4 frequencies on the side to select and they are all extremely close together - it does NOT transmit on all frequencies as the ad claims. Cheap plastic but might hold up for light use. Will be returning this item.

1)Sleek design that matches exactly the style of my ipod touch
What I didn't like about it:
1)Slips out of the ipod rather easily because it lacks the little clips on the sides that some of these connectors have--very annoying.
2)The shaft of this connector that goes into the ipod wasn't long enough to connect properly after I put a rubber case protector on it. Not really the fault of this unit, but the reality is that most people will probably have a similar experience given that you buy this to use with your ipod in the car.
3)Not all channels are available, so if you find a clear channel on your car radio, it might not be available on this unit.
4)Does not scan automatically to find the next clear channel like some of the more expensive models do, so trying to get to a clear channel between this and your car stereo is at least as involved as texting while you drive. I don't recommend doing either. It's a royal pain when you're driving and you start getting interference.
To sum up, I decided to use an old cassette tape converter / connector instead. It makes a little noise due to the plastic gears spinning which is not ideal, but I usually only hear it between songs when no music is playing. (Maybe by now they've improved these and you can get one that doesn't have moving parts that make noise). That said, much better sound quality and not losing your signal and having to adjust your radio station and the station on the FM Transmitter while driving make it a much better option in my opinion.

(More customer reviews)This item is pretty damn great I must admit. It works. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is the irritating remote that you have to use just to turn it on and off. The sound quality is good in my car but if I turn it up using the remote while it gets louder the static gets really bad. Speaking of static unless I turn up the volume with the remote there isn't any. I don't have to change radio stations all the time! Last thing I wish the neck were flexible. Where my lighter is in my car makes where the iPod sit kinda awkward it's straight up and I can't read the songs. Still a great product.

(More customer reviews)I just got this item a little while ago and must say it's one of the better purchases I've made in a while. My 2002 Jeep Wrangler only has a CD player, so for my brand new 32GB iPod Touch, it was either an FM transmitter or an overhauled dashboard. I opted for the much more lucrative of the two. I must say, I couldn't be happier with this product. Sure, you have to deal with signal interruptions as you pass through different towns with conflicting FM stations, but that's true of all FM transmitters. I am very pleased with the sound quality I am getting from this device with only a subtle hiss in the background when the music quiets (but this is probably caused by signal interference and not from the unit itself). I previously owned a cheapo $10 transmitter from ebay for my iPod Nano - this one is only a bit more expensive, but has infinitely better sound quality. As a previous reviewer mentioned, listening to music from your iPod with this device is very much like tuning to a clear FM station. For the audiophiles out there, this might be unacceptable (but they probably wouldn't be purchasing this kind of product anyway). For someone who wants an easy to use FM transmitter with great sound, this is for you.
Pros:
- Extremely reasonable price (compared to what they charge for similar devices at Best Buy)
- Great sound for an FM transmitter
- Easy to install and operate
- Long, flexible arm (the cigarette lighter in my car is recessed pretty deep; this device fits perfectly)
- Solid, attractive design that matches the style of the iPod/iPhone
Cons:
- Remote control only works when held directly in front of the device (low battery?)
- You must manually tune the device to a new frequency during signal disruption
- I was able to tune my old FM transmitter to 87.7, which is usually a clear frequency in most places; this one only allows you to tune from 88.1 - 107.9

This is the first report I am ever writing, so don't be too strict with me!
I purchased this Car Mount / FM Transmitter about a week ago and have it in use for only two days now. You take the car mount out of the box, plug it into your cigarette lighter, and it works. It holds my iPhone 3GS nicely. I have a case on (Incipio Feather Case) and I do not need to take it off, it fits perfectly as you can adjust the width of the holder as well as the back part of it (little turning knob on the back for adjustment). I would think that other iPods and earlier iPhones would also fit without problems.
The car mount comes with an audio cable which you attach to the bottom part of the holder and plug it into your iPhone so you can make calls and hear the voice over your car radio. Haven't used it much but it works quite well. The audio quality is very good, only very little background noise and in my opinion superior to what I had used before (little wireless iGrip FM adapter). I am actually impressed by the sound quality the transmitter delivers. It comes with a little on/off button that is very convenient. You can turn the device on and off and decide when you iPhone should be charged or not. When in off mode it will of course not play music through the transmitter. You have four preset buttons where you can save a frequency for quick access. The search feature is also pretty cool as you are able to find a free station within seconds. Just press two buttons at the side for about 3 seconds and the transmitter selects a station where it can send on without interference. You can easily use the car mount in both vertical and horizontal mode. This comes in handy if you want to use your iPhone for GPS navigation.
The downside of this product is that it will not fit every car I guess. I am driving a Ford Taurus 2005, and the DC outlet is inconveniently positioned, which means when I plug it in and try to adjust the whole thing, the part that goes into the outlet is too short and does not let you adjust well. the plastic parts in the middle of my car are in the way so I have to turn the whole holder slightly to the side to get it in a stable and well visible position. But this will vary from car to car and is not necessarily a negative aspect of the product.
However, when I first plugged it in, it was very hard to remove it again. I actually slightly damaged the plastic and rubber parts of the charger because I had to literally rip it out of the DC outlet. In my opinion this is because a) I have a very tight cigarette lighter (at least I think) and b) there are small rubber/gummi part on the side of the thing that goes into the outlet. The rubber parts fitted the charger so tightly that it was very hard to take it out again. When I ripped it out the rubber wore off and is now slightly damaged. I am not sure if this was my fault, but I didn't expect it to be that hard to take the charger out again. I tried it in another car after that and there it fit just well, it wasn't a problem to take it out again.
Anyway, all in all I give four stars for this product, mainly because the sound quality is amazing and it pretty much does what it is supposed to do: it holds and charges your iPhone and also plays your music through the car radio in really good quality. It is rather expensive, but so far worth the money I as I enjoy listening to non-noisy music from my iPhone in my car.
----------------- edit on January 23rd: It's been a while since I purchased this unit, and gave it a rather positive review. Due to the fact that a lot of people have experienced huge problems with this car mount system I feel like editing my first review:
I have the item in use now for about 2 months, and I would still rate this prodcut 4 stars out of five. I understand that iPhones would not work with any case (I guess the thiker the worse...), however, it does with mine. I have a very thin case called iFeather, made by Incipio (for 3GS). My unit (crossing my fingers) still works flawlessly, has not fallen into pieces, although I pulled it out and plugged it back in (different cars) many times, and does not shut off randomly. The hands free feature works well also.
I feel sorry for all those who made bad experiences with this prodcut, but wanted to tell you that there are positive stories. Honestly, given the rather high price of the unit, I would hope that it would work without problems in more cases for more people. This surely seems to be a downside of the FlexPod X2!

(More customer reviews)My wife recently gave me a new iPod Nano. I wanted to use it in my car but, my old FM transmitter stopped working. I set out to find a new transmitter that will be compatible and one that in particular, connected to the iPod via the headphone jack. I have bought several different FM transmitters that connected to the bottom connector of the iPod that didn't work very well in Los Angeles. The only one that did work was the NewerTech RoadTrip FM that just had the headphone connector. However, it broke and it is not sold anymore.
Decided to give the AllKit FM Transmitter a try. I figure for less than $8 bucks, what the heck. Well, I've been using it for about a month now and it works great, even with the busy airways here in Los Angeles. Also used it on a five hour road trip to Carmel and it worked like a champ. The sound is pretty good. Not as good as a directly connected iPod but, unfortunately, I bought my Outback one year early and I don't feel like taking apart my whole console and using a soldering iron on my stereo to add an aux jack.
I haven't tried the remote yet but, I'll give it a try soon. I usually just put my iPod on shuffle so I usually don't touch it while driving. The unit itself feels a little flimsy and the side clamps are already jammed but, for what I paid, I'm just glad I can listen to my new iPod while I drive around LA county. For about $14.00 total including shipping, this is a bargain. My $40 plus monster FM transmitter never worked as good.
