Sony DAV-HDX500/i BRAVIA Home Theater System Review

Sony DAV-HDX500/i BRAVIA Home Theater System
Average Reviews:

Very pleased so far. Sounds great, plenty of power to rock your media room, and was easy to set up. There's an on-screen setup feature that lets you easily customize the setup for your particular room configuration. An included microphone lets you do a push-button fine-tuning of the sound relative to speaker placement. It's cool to see the system report exactly how far all the speakers are away from the microphone.
I also purchased the wireless surround kit from Sony. Setup for this was also pretty simple, and was supported by the HDX500 system.
Remote is typical Sony - lots of buttons. But fairly intuitive thus far.
The digital media port works well with the different generations of iPods we have in the house. On-screen graphics are very rudimentary, however, which is a big departure from the iPod interface.
There are a bunch of different sound fields that could be better described in the on-screen system or in the manual.

As a leader in products with HDMI connectivity, Sony has created BRAVIA Theater Sync Technology to go beyond simple audio and video transmission. When combined with a selected number of BRAVIA LCD televisions and other Sony audio and video products, control functions will be transmitted via the HDMI cable. With One Touch Play operations, several steps have been reduced to one. Press the PLAY button on the remote, watch the audio and/or the video component(s) turn on, then the BRAVIA television will turn on and switch to the correct video input. THE PRODUCT - I was looking for a middle of the road iPod speaker because I wasn't interested in paying $200 for a BOSE iPod speaker. I wanted something small, simple and reasonably priced. THIS IS IT! Don't expect BOSE quality sound, but it is more than adequate for a desktop speaker in an office or to make your 1st gen iPod touch a great alarm clock (which it has inside it, but no built in external speakers to make it useful) Also, this dock is a great way to charge the touch, which does not come with a wall charging adapter.
THE CUSTOMER SERVICE - The only glitch in my experience was that the speaker/dock did not come with a universal iPod touch adapter. Your iPod will still attach to the speaker and work fine, and for the most part sit on the dock solidly. But the adapter makes it much more solid. I e-mailed Satechi and asked for an adapter. They CALLED me back, that's right CALLED me back, and offered to send one out free of charge. THAT'S an A+ in my book.

I bought this product but am not using it for any kind of video display so I can't speak to it for that. I'm using it as a sound system for my ipod and computer and it hasn't let me down. The sound really packs a punch and is really nice if you use the right equalizer to get the proper balance in sound. The only drawback is that it doesn't put out any sound when using these functions through the center speaker so really its just like having a 4.1 system unless you use it as a surround system for a tv. It goes pretty loud considering i haven't really gone above 22 volume even though it goes up to 34. The balance is really good, although I tend to like a little more bass in my music, which it offers plenty of. Great system that isn't too pricey. Would recommend to anyone who wants an easy way to get out of having to use a 2.1 system on a laptop.

iConcepts Universal Docking Cradle and Wireless Remote for iPod (19688C-IP) Review

iConcepts Universal Docking Cradle and Wireless Remote for iPod (19688C-IP)
Average Reviews:

This dock works for synchronizing with iTunes or playing music from my 6th generation iPod Classic 120 GB. I have to take the iPod out of its clear plastic case in order to fit it into the dock. The Apple brand insets don't fit this dock.
The remote works well if it's pointed directly at the dock in a clear line of sight and fairly close range.
Of course, this dock has to be plugged into a computer or AC power supply through its USB cable. It's not battery powered.
This dock does NOT work for my 5th generation iPod Nano 8 GB. It includes an inset that fits, but the electronics are apparently incompatible--the iPod plays out of its internal speaker rather than through the docking station. For the time being, the Apple Universal Dock - Digital player docking station seems to be the way to go for this new iPod.
I don't know what they mean when they say you can "use the included A/V cable to enjoy video on your television." I don't see any video port or cable. You can see the stereo audio cable that was included with this dock in the customer images I posted. No video on the cable they sent me. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I saw this for sale at a local store, so I thought I would do some digging for information. Unfortunately, there is almost zero. It doesn't say it anywhere online or on the box, but this will indeed charge your iPhone 3G. It's possible that they did not want to pay for licensing. Since it will charge the 3G, it should charge all of the new non-firewire iPods (Nano 5G, etc).
It's nice and compact, but certainly sturdy. Once you take a leaf through the instruction manual, it's very easy to use. Not one of those things I recommend to start pushing buttons feet-first, because you'll probably be woken up at 2:30am by accident.
What else can I say about it? It charges my iPhone, plays pretty well (a 5.1 system this isn't), has an aux-in for a Zune, etc, has dual-alarms with 3-4 different options each. If you're looking for a cheap replacement for your firewire-charging alarm clock, this is a good choice.

Griffin Cradle Charging Dock Station with AV Stereo Video, Music, Photos for Apple iPod Nano / iPod Nano 2nd Gen / iPod Classic 4th & 5th Generation / iPod Photo / iPod Video with RF Remote Control Review

I recently acquired this charging station when I purchased a new iPod Classic 160 GB. (Replacing a 5 year old 60 GB Photo Classic that died after a rather short life, in my opinion.) This charging station fulfills the same function as the charging station that came with my old iPod (no charging station with the new one) plus provides a simple function remote for working with the music. Basically, you can turn the iPod on or off, adjust volume, or move forward or back on the current play list. All the functionality I need. I cannot comment about the range because my desk is barely 5 feet from my stereo. Seems to work fine over that range.
My concerns:
One: For some reason the charging base has a pilot light that seems essentially useless.
Two: The fit of the iPod into the base is not "tight" like the base was with my old iPod. I wonder if, over time, this will put a strain on the connector pins on the base and/or the iPod.
Three: Having previously used an AirClick remote with my old iPod, I note that this remote carries forward two annoying features.
First, it has a switch to enable/disable the remote. In my experience, this was a useless feature that more often was bumped in error and led to frustration thinking the remove was not working.
Second, if you need to replace the battery inside the remote (it lasted a long time for me with my older AirClick) the bottom of the remote is held on by three of the tiniest screws you can imagine. Ultimately i lost two of the screws on my old remote. Sometimes I would have to take the base off because the battery would shift out of position.
Overall, this product is pretty good. I did not really cross shop other products to see if there was something better because the price was reasonable and it met my needs. Really my biggest concern is about the way the 160 GB iPod Classic is not tightly held in the base.

Use Airdock to connect your iPod directly to your TV , Home Stereo or your Computer !
To use AirDock with your home entertainment system :
1. In this package, we've included our own high-quality HomeConnect AV cable for video and audio connection to your home entertainment system. Plug HomeConnect's 1/8" plug into AirDock's AV out port. Plug the other end of HomeConnect into the appropriate RCA plugs in your entertainment system.
About the Remote
AirDock comes with its own full-function RF remote control, that works through walls, up to 60 feet away. Use it to control Play/Pause, Fast Forward, Previous/Rewind and volume, as you would expect from any remote.
If you have the good fortune to live in a two-AirDock household, AirDock's Pairing feature may be useful. Through Pairing, you can "lock" your AirDock so that it will respond to only one AirDock Remote, ignoring the commands of other remotes in the same household.
Other Features
Your AirDock features video pass-through so you can control a video while it is playing. The Play, Pause, Fast Forward, and Rewind functions on the Remote works as you would expect your DVD player to work.
And, of course you can use AirDock simply as a standard iPod dock, to sync your iPod with files on your computer.

This is the next generation of iPod sound docks! I own a Logitech and a Bose sound dock. They both have their good and bad points, but neither of them offers the capability of this product...namely, the ability to have complete control of all iPod functions, using the iPod itself, at a remote distance from the sound box. The remote controls on all other units serve mainly as volume controllers, with the user having to approach the sound box to see what's going on on the iPod's screen. And though this is obviously anecdotal, I would testify that the Yamaha's sound quality outstrips both my Bose Sound Dock II, which has the typical Bose "muffled," soft, basey, quality, and my Logitech PureFi II, which has very good crisp sound at low levels but rapidly loses quality as the volume goes up (and has other well-documented issues as well). The Yamaha appears to have a wide frequency range and the ability to hold the sound quality with increased volume. The Yamaha also offers you the option to plug your iPod directly into the sound box itself, as you do with other brands, and use the separate, included hand-held to control the functions if you prefer. All is not perfect. If I am not mistaken, the hand-held transmitter, which hold your iPod, is RF (radio frequency) operated, but responds in a line-of-site manner, akin to an infrared system. If you block the transmitter with an obstruction, even your own body, the sound will be disrupted. Still, this is a minor limitation, considering the complete control available. This was a gift purchase for my spouse, but it is so impressive I wouldn't be surprised to see one appearing for my own use in the future. Kudos Yamaha! Play all your favorite digital audio files out loud without running wiresthrough the house with the help of the ACR-212 AudioCast wireless receiver. Thereceiver, which works in conjunction with the ACT-211 AudioCast transmitter (soldseparately), incorporates 2.4 GHz Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS)technology to receive your PC or MP3 player's audio signal from a distance. Setup issimple: Just plug the AudioCast receiver and transmitter into nearby wall outlets, run acable between the receiver and your stereo's auxiliary or tape input, and connect youraudio device to the transmitter through its headphone jack. Within seconds, you'll havecomplete access to your entire digital music collection, with no long wires to unroll orprogramming to master. Even better, you can connect up to two receivers to eachAudioCast transmitter, letting you create two distinct music zones in your home. And forpeople with particularly large homes, it's even possible to run a single audio signalthrough two AudioCast transmitters at the same time, in effect turning your home into afour-zone system.
The real star of the AudioCast system, however, is the wireless FHSS technology. Foryears, wireless solutions have been plagued with outside interference from otherproducts using the crowded 2.4 GHz band. The Soundcast engineering team, bycontrast, refined the AudioCast's wireless technology to the point where neither themicrowave nor the cordless phone will affect the quality of the listening experience. Nobuzzes, no dropouts, and no distortion--just pure, clean sound.
Other details include a full wireless line-of-sight range of 350 feet (150 feet throughwalls and doors), support for PCs and Macs (including the iTunes audio format), and asleek black housing. The AudioCast receiver measures 6.8 by 2 by 3.5 inches (W x H xD) and is backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box AudioCast receiver, AC/DC adapter, 3.5 mm mini-to-mini cable, 3.5 mm mini-to-RCAcable, RCA-to-RCA cable, 3.5 mm mini gender adapter, user's manual.

Creative Xdock Wireless Music System for iPod (Black) Review

Creative Xdock Wireless Music System for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

Ohhhh, this is so cool. I was kind of afraid that this wouldn't work at first from the negative reviews I've read about this. But really I found out what my problem with wireless was. It was a florescent lamp I had near my computer. Using a process of elimination I tested my network's WiFi with the Xdock on and off (unplugged even) and I got the same problem with my wireless. "That's odd" I thought. So I looked around to see what else would cause interference because I've been getting interference before. And on a hunch I turned off this floor lamp with a florescent bulb in it. I got better reception to the WiFi router. Even with the Xdock on. So for me it wasn't the Xdock. Be sure to check to see if there are any other sources of interference in your house. Especially florescent bulbs between your computer and your wireless router.
As for features, I couldn't be more happy. I can actually listen to my podcasts from my main computer in my living room by just connecting the computer to the line in of the Xdock and I still can have my main speakers hooked up to the computer by way of the Xdock. Of course it's just a straight connection from the computer with a plain old stereo miniplug, no controls for the computer, but now I can move through the house and still hear my podcasts. Nice. And of course it's nice to hear my iPod without having to have my computer on. It's a nice dock as well. Charging and data. All the controls are there for the iPod. It takes a little getting used to the remote control button way of controlling the iPod only because I'm used to the scroll wheel, but that's a small thing to get used to because everything the iPod can do is duplicated on the remote plus a couple things the iPod can't do with it's own controls. It's a nice little receiver and transmitter. The only mark I deduct is for bulkiness. Otherwise, for all it does, two thumbs up. I like it.
I got this from Woot!. Transmitter and a receiver. :)
[UPDATE: I've figured out two things that were complaints of other people. First the wireless problem. Yes, if you put the Xdock right next to the wireless router it will interfere with the signal (both may work at 2.4GHz). Move it 3-4 feet away and it doesn't interfere. I have mine on my desk and the wireless router on a shelf. Second, the problem with the remote for the receiver shutting off the base unit as well. The remote for the receiver is the same one that comes with the base unit except with less buttons. It can actually control both units and is not unique to each unit. It's like having two of the same model TVs in the same room and wondering why the remote of one controls the other. It's not hard to guess why. Both units are supposed to be in different rooms. That's the whole point. So put each unit out of the line of sight of each other so you won't accidentally turn off the wrong unit. The remote for one can control the other and vice versa.]
[UPDATE]: For some reason, and I didn't notice this at all when I first got it, all the screw holes holding the unit together became busted. This whole time I was as careful with it as any of my other high tech toys and suddenly when moving the device I heard rattling. My guess is that for some reason the plastic is brittle or maybe when assembling it they torked on the screws a little too tight. It still works fine. Right now I have tape holding it together. Very weird. I opened the unit (since it was already open) and shook out the plastic bits and then unscrewed the screws so there wouldn't be any more rattling (cleaning it out in case the loose parts cause problems with circuitry). But I'm still using it. I'll probably upgrade to something else similar.

Altec Lansing M812 Octiv Air Wireless Speaker System with Dock for iPod (Black) Review

Altec Lansing M812 Octiv Air Wireless Speaker System with Dock for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When it comes to playing your iTunes music in a room away from the computer, products tend to take two main approaches. The first approach streams music from your computer to speakers of your choice. Apple Airport Express or the Sonos System are an example. The second approach involves docking iPods directly to an integrated set of speakers. The Octiv Air essentially takes the "dock" approach, but provides an aux port, so it also supports the "computer streaming" approach when paired with the above products. Thus, the Octiv Air operates in a very impressive, unique way!
Better yet, instead of the dock being physically attached to the speaker system, the dock is separate and wirelessly streams your iPod or "computer streamer"'s sound to the speaker, which can be placed elsewhere. For me, that feature makes the system brilliant!
My wife likes to listen to her iPod in the kitchen, but the problem with other iPod docking products is that our counter space is too valuable to fit a big speaker. Now, we can set the iPod in a small, out-of-the-way dock on the kitchen counter, but stream the music to the speaker, which sits elsewhere!
Another plus is that the wireless dock supports any sound output from your iPod. This means that in addition to the music on the iPod hard drive, you can also use the Octiv Air for Pandora internet radio and any other music supported by iPod Touch/iPhone applications!
As for the sound quality, it's excellent! It's much crisper than the docking products I've used in the past, and rivals any high-end docking system I've heard.
My only complaints are trivial. First, while the product description says the wall-mounting bracket is "optional", what it SHOULD say is that it's "sold separately". Second, while the system works with iPhone 3G, docking it will result in your iPhone giving you a message saying "this accessory is not designed to work with iPhone". You can just close the warning and everything will work as normal, but be prepared for the annoyance if you want to dock your phone.
All in all, I think Altec Lansing has thrown together a FANTASTIC product, that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend if you're in the market for a high-end iPod speaker system!

I bought this speaker because I wanted to play music from my iPhone wirelessly while retaining high quality sound. In that respect, I am not disappointed as the sound is very rich with plenty of bass and clear mids/highs. I was concerned that the bluetooth transmission would introduce artifacts/digital distortion, but I can't hear any.
My only complaint is the iPhone pairing which can be a bit finicky, especially when you switch between different iPhones. It will either take a few seconds for the music to start or you will need to press the connect/reset buttons.

Yamaha YID-W10 Wireless iPod Dock (Black) Review

I bought this product cause I love to have my iphone in my hand while sitting on the couch or at the dining table and being able to switch songs frequently without having to get up. It's also nice to be able to control your receiver volume by using the side buttons on your iPhone.
However, you should be aware of a couple drawbacks of this product:
- This dock does not allow you to display song title and album artwork on your TV screen. If you want this feature, you'll need to go with the non-wireless dock YDS-11SL. Also you cannot send iTunes videos to the TV like you can with the YDS-11SL.
However, this product has a video synchronization feature that works well - basically this allows you to play itunes video content or youtube videos on your iPhone screen (while holding your iphone in your hand) while the audio wirelessly comes through your receiver speakers. The device does a perfect job of syncing up the audio with the video (but remember the video will only be on your tiny iphone screen rather than up on the TV).
- I bought this product because I wanted a wireless solution for my iPhone music and yAired technology was supposed to be hands-down better sound quality than a bluetooth connection. I still think it's better than bluetooth, but I was a little disappointed because the audio occasionally breaks in and out with yAired. The audio breaks are rare - It usually happens when you first start playing music (maybe connection takes a while to solidify) or if you're moving around the house with the iphone in your hand. Note that it does play perfectly everytime when you have the iphone sitting in the dock.
Overall I still like the wireless feature, but was a little disappointed with yAired connection quality.

Sony AIR-SA20PK S-AirPlay Digital Wireless Speaker System for iPod (Black) Review

I had high hopes for this product --- needed a way to put sound throughout my small house and functionality seemed great (the ability to use different modes in different rooms, ability to use remote with each of the speaker units to control the ipod, etc.) Unfortunately, it did not work as well as hoped.
The base and speakers had a hard time talking to each other, and they were only 50-60 ft apart and in a relatively unobstructed path. Had to move the base closer and align the speaker so that it was in a more direct visual view. Still, with people in the room it would fade in and out. Not sure if this is because I have wireless internet in the house, which the manual says might interfere, but who that would be looking for wireless speakers doesn't have wireless internet??
The sound quality is very good. Not quite as good as my Bose docking station, but I was pleasantly surprised. The other big downside for me with the sound, however, and the last straw that prompted me to return the product, is the volume level. The highest setting is not all that loud. Fine if you are in the same room... but sometimes I would crank up the volume on my Bose docking station and listen to the music in other rooms or outside ... can't really do this with the Sony.
