Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone Review

Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first rule of microphones is that, "No one microphone is perfect for every purpose." Rule two is, "Experiment with different mics in different applications to find your signature sound." I've used Shure SM58's along with their ancestors and relatives back to 1968. I primarily used them for broadcasting and recording spoken word content but I have used (and still do use) them for singing some back up vocals. The SM58 does one thing well and that is vocal performance when used very close to the mouth for public address use. Some people, me included, actually sound better and more comfortable in a live performance setting when using another mic, the Shure SM-57. The SM-58 is a very good vocal mic and for some people probably the best choice. For example, anyone who can not resist putting the mic right up against their lips while singing will probably want the SM-58. People with softer or weaker voices will want the SM-58. The SM-58 is highly directional and has a noticable yet manageable proximity effect (which means the bass increases the closer you get.) This mic does not pick up well from much over 8 inches away. The reason so many singers think you are supposed to shove microphones practically inside your mouth is because the ball type Shure vocal mics require you to get them very close or they don't sound right. On the other hand, the SM-57 sounds best several inches away from the user's mouth and works fine up to 12 inches away. While the SM-58 is certainly the number one professional PA vocal mic, there are precious few other uses for it because it has a colored sound with a prominent frequency response boost in the upper midrange plus a sound source has to be very close before it is picked up clearly. It works ok for conga drums and the like, but the SM-58 is about the last thing you'd want to use to mic a sax or guitar. Personally these mics are not the best for my mic technique or the basic nature my voice, but for some people they sound great. The live vocal mic that works best for me is the Shure SM-57 with a windscreen. However for other people the SM-58 works better. It depends on your voice and what you want the mic to do. If you have a very deep voice, the SM-58 might be the second best choice after the SM-57 which has a better low frequency response. One certain advantage of the SM-58 is the excellent gain before feedback capability. This mic can be turned up louder than almost any other mic without that annoying PA squeal. Another advantage of the SM-58 is that it is still available (at a slight extra cost) with a built-in on/off switch. The SM-58's ball shaped grills are very sturdy and even if you should dent one you can get a replacement which screws right on for about ten dollars. I've seen SM-58's dented, rusty, dusty, smoked up, spit into, with pieces missing and slammed into a hardwood stage with the full weight of a boom stand adding mass to the fall and yet I've never seen but one stop working and that malfunction was due to an on/off switch that got dirt in it. All the pro-line Shure mics are top quality. The pro line Shures also hold their value well. If you buy one and decide you don't like it, you can get about what you paid for it on eBay. I would compare as many mics as possible before buying one. Senneheiser's EVOLUTION mics sound really good too and are worth a look. The SM-58 will be the number one on-stage vocal mic for the forseeable future because most people follow the crowd instead of actually trying out different mics and picking the one that works best for their particular voice. These things are so durable that even if they stopped making them today they'd still be around for another 20 years at least.

The Shure SM58 unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone is designed for professional vocal use in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. It has a legendary vocal response for singing or speech. Rugged construction, a proven shock-mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently, outdoors or indoors.

The Standard for Dynamic Vocal Mics You'll find multiple SM58s in most any studio or live music venue--no doubt you've heard of them. The SM58's frequency response is tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass rolloff. The uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise, which is ideal for vocals, especially in live situations where background noise is substantial.
The microphone's pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise, making it a great choice for handheld vocals, and the built-in wind/pop filter helps keep things in check.
The dark gray, enamel-painted, die-cast metal case has legendary looks and--paired with the mesh grille--legendary toughness.

The sound quality on this lapel mike was good. No popping, hissing, or crackling. The clip on it is not one of my preferred types. It is hard to tell from the photo, but the clip is one solid piece of plastic, and not an alligator type clip. Still, good value for the money.

We purchased one of these devices to use for our church for audio recordings. While it picks up very well, there is a lot of noise that comes along with it. We tried new batteries, different rooms, balanced/unbalanced cables, different output devices -- it didn't matter, the buzzing around the speakers voice was always present and difficult to remove afterwards. The unit works well, and if you're not recording it would probably be fine (nobody could tell on the audio system). It just didn't work, though, for audio recording.

This wireless system is a really good middle of the road system. It isn't a cheap wanna-be toy, and it isn't an over priced waste of money either. It is a solid pro-quality kit that does it's job really well. The price makes it a no-brainer. Sure, there are systems with better sound, longer range, and smaller headpieces. You will pay big bucks for those upgrades. Line of sight, the distance of this system is very good. The sound is more than adequate for live shows (as it is designed for), and with the foam wind blocker off, the headpiece is not distracting.
If you're looking for wireless for DJ, workout, or worship use, this is your answer. I'm sure you'll be as happy with it as I am.

I teach a weekly non-denominational adult Bible study, and as the group grew larger it became difficult for some to hear me speak. I purchased an AmpliVox Buddy amplifier but found the hand held microphone to be quite cumbersome. My wife then ordered the AmpliVox S1600 wireless microphone system (with lapel mic)for me. It is an excellent product and picks up the sound easily. Even persons sitting at the opposite end of the large room (some of whom are "hard of hearing") report that they can hear and understand every word. I would highly recommend this product.

This wireless lapel microphone, transmitter, and receiver works well for close quarters shooting. The 9 volt batteries can last up to 8 hours.
The sound quality of this mic is very good. But there are some issues. The RF signal is weak and I have experienced interference issues when the transmitter was covered by a suit jacket with the subject located fifteen to twenty feet away from the transmitter while other RF devices are present in the immediate vicinity. So Far I have documented four events with this set and I have experienced white noise and interefernce at two of those events. I did not experience sonic interference the entire time but once in a while a bit of static would build up and then fade away over 20 to 60 seconds of time. This seemed to depend on the movement of the subject wearing the transmitter crossing the path of other RF (radio frequency) transmitting devices. For that reason I have decided to purchase a higher end unit for Business and Wedding video shoots. I am still going to use this mic for studio interviews and on location shooting where my subject will never be more then 10 feet away when I have the luxury time to work out any interference issues.
All in all, I do like this wireless mic set because it is easy to work with and fills a a particular niche for beginning Videographers. The Pro-88 came with a few extra things that helped. These include; a single ear bud that allows the camera operator to monitor the audio signal as its being recorded, two detachable belt clips for the transmitter and the receiver, a camera shoe mounting bracket for the transmitter if you would rather attach it to the camera, four strips of Velcro, and two strips of soft foam for resting the transmitter on an inclined surface.
I recommend this wireless lapel microphone system for small budget projects and as a possible back up for small events and venues. However I would suggest saving up and buying a pro series of wireless lav mics for weddings and corporate events.

I advise a high school drama club and we have been using Shure wireless microphones for many years. We are pleased with the WL95 but should replace them more often than we do. Some of ours are many years old! We should be more aggressive in replacing them since they sound muddy and pop when they get old and dirty. ( Note that the kids pretty much abuse the mics; they don't handle them or store them like they should...)
This vendor (Full Compass) was the cheapest I could find anywhere and my local supplier says I paid only a couple dollars more than he can get them for. (He price matches but wouldn't do it in this case.) Prices are all over the place! In addition to being the cheapest, they were easy to deal with and quite prompt! (Note that Full Compass was not the cheapest when I got quotes for an "inexpensive" intercom system last year. So, shop around.)

I've had this set of mics for about one year now. I must disclose an amazing fact: there is absolutely no feedback no matter how close you stand to any of the speakers! I have 7 speakers around an area where I use this set of mics. I use them for Karaoke parties. Any one can have a mic standing right next to any of the 7 speakers and there is absolutely no feedback at all sound and mic levels. The Shure does know how to capture voice. This set of mic is very sensitive while not very draining on batteries. On another note, I did purchased a set of rechargable batteries from Amazon.com (You can serach my review to find it). I had generic brand, Panasonic, Sony, and few other types of mics before. None of them can come even close to the performance of this set of Shures! For the Amazon.com price, I highly recommend this product. I've been a very happy customer :)

This is a great basic wireless system from Shure, comprised of a PG88 receiver and two PG2/PG58 handheld microphone transmitters. Ideal for lead and backing vocals in live performance, karaoke, or other wireless applications.
The PG88 provides two channels of wireless connectivity in a compact system. Click here for a larger image
