Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone Review

Shure SM58LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first rule of microphones is that, "No one microphone is perfect for every purpose." Rule two is, "Experiment with different mics in different applications to find your signature sound." I've used Shure SM58's along with their ancestors and relatives back to 1968. I primarily used them for broadcasting and recording spoken word content but I have used (and still do use) them for singing some back up vocals. The SM58 does one thing well and that is vocal performance when used very close to the mouth for public address use. Some people, me included, actually sound better and more comfortable in a live performance setting when using another mic, the Shure SM-57. The SM-58 is a very good vocal mic and for some people probably the best choice. For example, anyone who can not resist putting the mic right up against their lips while singing will probably want the SM-58. People with softer or weaker voices will want the SM-58. The SM-58 is highly directional and has a noticable yet manageable proximity effect (which means the bass increases the closer you get.) This mic does not pick up well from much over 8 inches away. The reason so many singers think you are supposed to shove microphones practically inside your mouth is because the ball type Shure vocal mics require you to get them very close or they don't sound right. On the other hand, the SM-57 sounds best several inches away from the user's mouth and works fine up to 12 inches away. While the SM-58 is certainly the number one professional PA vocal mic, there are precious few other uses for it because it has a colored sound with a prominent frequency response boost in the upper midrange plus a sound source has to be very close before it is picked up clearly. It works ok for conga drums and the like, but the SM-58 is about the last thing you'd want to use to mic a sax or guitar. Personally these mics are not the best for my mic technique or the basic nature my voice, but for some people they sound great. The live vocal mic that works best for me is the Shure SM-57 with a windscreen. However for other people the SM-58 works better. It depends on your voice and what you want the mic to do. If you have a very deep voice, the SM-58 might be the second best choice after the SM-57 which has a better low frequency response. One certain advantage of the SM-58 is the excellent gain before feedback capability. This mic can be turned up louder than almost any other mic without that annoying PA squeal. Another advantage of the SM-58 is that it is still available (at a slight extra cost) with a built-in on/off switch. The SM-58's ball shaped grills are very sturdy and even if you should dent one you can get a replacement which screws right on for about ten dollars. I've seen SM-58's dented, rusty, dusty, smoked up, spit into, with pieces missing and slammed into a hardwood stage with the full weight of a boom stand adding mass to the fall and yet I've never seen but one stop working and that malfunction was due to an on/off switch that got dirt in it. All the pro-line Shure mics are top quality. The pro line Shures also hold their value well. If you buy one and decide you don't like it, you can get about what you paid for it on eBay. I would compare as many mics as possible before buying one. Senneheiser's EVOLUTION mics sound really good too and are worth a look. The SM-58 will be the number one on-stage vocal mic for the forseeable future because most people follow the crowd instead of actually trying out different mics and picking the one that works best for their particular voice. These things are so durable that even if they stopped making them today they'd still be around for another 20 years at least.

The Shure SM58 unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone is designed for professional vocal use in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. It has a legendary vocal response for singing or speech. Rugged construction, a proven shock-mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently, outdoors or indoors.

The Standard for Dynamic Vocal Mics You'll find multiple SM58s in most any studio or live music venue--no doubt you've heard of them. The SM58's frequency response is tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass rolloff. The uniform cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source and minimizes background noise, which is ideal for vocals, especially in live situations where background noise is substantial.
The microphone's pneumatic shock-mount system cuts down handling noise, making it a great choice for handheld vocals, and the built-in wind/pop filter helps keep things in check.
The dark gray, enamel-painted, die-cast metal case has legendary looks and--paired with the mesh grille--legendary toughness.

The sound quality on this lapel mike was good. No popping, hissing, or crackling. The clip on it is not one of my preferred types. It is hard to tell from the photo, but the clip is one solid piece of plastic, and not an alligator type clip. Still, good value for the money.

We purchased one of these devices to use for our church for audio recordings. While it picks up very well, there is a lot of noise that comes along with it. We tried new batteries, different rooms, balanced/unbalanced cables, different output devices -- it didn't matter, the buzzing around the speakers voice was always present and difficult to remove afterwards. The unit works well, and if you're not recording it would probably be fine (nobody could tell on the audio system). It just didn't work, though, for audio recording.

I bought this for use with my Sony camcorder. I chose it because it was a 900 MHz system rather than the 100 MHz systems from Hysonic, etc. The included lapel mike is not very good. Lots of distortion and very cheaply made. I tried a better quality Radio Shack lapel mike, #33-3013 and got much better results. Compared to putting the mike right into the camcorder, the wireless transmitter shows considerably more noise and lower sound level. No noticeable difference in frequency response, at least for voice recording. Dropouts started occuring when I was about 50 feet away. Bottom line is this isn't broadcast quality but certainly adequate for amateur use.

Matrix Pro Wireless Lavalier Clip-on Microphone System
Average Reviews:

I was first skeptical of this wireless microphone because of the low price. I was surprised with the overall performance of the mic for its price! Though it has a cheap plastic feel, the broadcast quality and range were good for indoor events. There are a few things that I don't like about it though. The wireless mic has only one channel and requires tuning adjustment before every new use. The wireless mic isn't expandable or shareable; you can only use one of these mics at your events. The provided lavalier mic is pretty cheap. It's too sensitive to wind and it gives the transmitter a hiss. Replacing the mic removes the hiss.
Overall, this is a good priced set for a wireless mic.

I advise a high school drama club and we have been using Shure wireless microphones for many years. We are pleased with the WL95 but should replace them more often than we do. Some of ours are many years old! We should be more aggressive in replacing them since they sound muddy and pop when they get old and dirty. ( Note that the kids pretty much abuse the mics; they don't handle them or store them like they should...)
This vendor (Full Compass) was the cheapest I could find anywhere and my local supplier says I paid only a couple dollars more than he can get them for. (He price matches but wouldn't do it in this case.) Prices are all over the place! In addition to being the cheapest, they were easy to deal with and quite prompt! (Note that Full Compass was not the cheapest when I got quotes for an "inexpensive" intercom system last year. So, shop around.)

I bought this microphone after I got one from Radio Shack (big mistake), the quality of this one is outstanding, very clear and super portable, I had to buy a mono to stereo adapter since the sound is only in one channel (you can correct this in production w the adapter you save some time), after I found the great quality built in this little device I returned the other one from RS (really bad). If you are looking for a good and portable mic for a tide budget this one is definitely it!!

Not only will the 351 VR dramatically improve the quality of your soundtracks, but it is so convenient and easy to use, you'll never want to use your camcorder without it!The Nady 351 VR eliminates the problems associated with camcorder onboard mics by allowing the microphone to be placed at the source of the sound where the action is. So even if you're shooting from 200' away, you still get clear, professional sounding audio with no interfering ambient noise. And thanks to Nady's Surface Mount Technology (SMT), the 351 VR receiver is ultra compact. Can't say how it works. It was recommended by a local store to go along with Audio-Technica's PRO 88W VHF wireless microphone systems that are designed for use with a camcorder. However, upon receiving both items, I discovered the headset has a 4-pin connection, and the wireless set accepts 3.5mm pin. The descriptions clearly state this. I just didn't read it, since I was going on 'professional' advice. My bad. I will say, the headset does seem to be well made, for the price. It's probably a great buy if it has the right connection for your system.
That being said, American Musical Supply, who the headset was ordered from, was exceptional fast in responding to my request for a RA# to return the headset. Credit was promptly applied to my account. I will shop with them in the future!

Pyle-Pro PDWM96 - Lavalier Wireless Microphone System
Average Reviews:

We bought the Pyle-Pro Lavalier Wireless Microphone System for use with the Pyle Pwma230. We needed an extra wireless mic for our workshop presenters and this was a very inexpensive choice. For the price, this worked a lot better than I expected but it did take some adjustment to the "Trim Screw" on the receiver to get the clarity and range needed. We also had to tape the little wire antenna up so it wasn't hanging in front of the speaker (this might not be an issue for you, depending on where you plug yours in).
There are a lot of very expensive wireless mic units that I'm sure would provide better sound and range, but this one works just fine for our uses.
Overall, a good value for the low cost of this unit.

If you are in the market for a wireless microphone setup for your video camera and like me, you don't want to spend top dollar. You may like the budget friendly Audio Technica Pro 88W/T setup. Listen in to the sound quality and judge for yourself.
Comes with connectors that are compatible with most major cameras. 9v battery for the transmitter and receiver. I found no issues getting it to work with my Canon ZR-70. For practical purposes, the sound quality was as good as anything I've seen produced on the web where I know the audio equipment being used is of much higher caliber. This device seemed to hold its own and do a very good job providing close, crisp audio in a situation where it would be nice to roam free.
The distance was not tested. I did not go 300 yards out to see how far it would go. Most videos I've done are in close proximity to the camera but would be detrimental without some kind of on-person audio setup. Having a wireless option makes this possible and enhances the video without providing so many features that is otherwise overkill for the task at hand.
I'm positive on this review as I found the setup easy and the audio quality to be very good without any noticeablestatic or interference.
